Activate Course Graduates Celebrate Success

Glasgow University was buzzing with excitement recently as the latest cohort of Activate students received their certificates earlier this month.

The historic Humanity Lecture Theatre came alive as students and tutors reconnected for a special celebration. Helen Martin, Activate Programme Co-ordinator, opened the celebration congratulating the graduates on their success. Students, family members and friends then cheered as each person received their award on the podium.

The event marked the successful completion of the Activate course earlier this year. Activate is a foundation level course in community development run in partnership with local community organisations. Key features include building on the experience of volunteers and activists to develop community capacity and strengthen local networks through raising awareness of different ways to effect community change.

The course encourages and enables participants to think more deeply about the work they are doing and challenge their own views and the views of others.

Those who completed the programme included ng homes staff, local community organisations such as Glasgow Girls Club, Three60 Springburn Mens Shed, Rape Crisis Centre, Stronger Enterprises Together, Glasgow Baby Foodbank, G20 Youth Project and North Glasgow Healthy Living Community. The course has been a real success, resulting in family members of students applying for the next Activate course.

Activate Tutor, Gary Harkins, said “I was so proud to work with this group of people, they were so inspiring that I loved a Tuesday night and looked forward to the classes every week”.

Well done to all the students, who are now equipped to contribute to the development of the local community!

Activate is open to anyone over 16 years of age and there is no upper age limit. Participants will learn about community work and local/global issues through discussion and group work. Anyone interested should contact Paula Mailey on 0141 560 6000 or email pmailey@nghomes.net
