Glasgow Kelvin Community & Youth Hub Springs into Action!

Announcing a new resource for families and young people in Springburn.

Glasgow Kelvin College’s exciting Community and Youth Hub has now swung into action at its Springburn Campus with around 50 local people already enjoying the wide variety of activities available.

As a strong community partner, the College deployed its streetworkers into the community who identified a gap in resources for families, adults and young people in the evenings. Staff then worked with other stakeholders, including NG Homes, Police Scotland and Springburn Community Hub, and local residents to put together a busy and engaging programme which will encourage learning, creativity, wellbeing and healthy living, as well as outdoor activities.

Open to people from 4yrs and upwards (under 11s must be accompanied by an adult/parent who is participating), the programme offers fitness suite and gym sessions, games, hair and beauty tasters, arts & crafts, canoeing, ski-ing, healthy cooking, Youth Access drop-in and short courses in computing and ICT. The sessions run from 5pm-8pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

The Hub also gives local people access to the state-of-the art resources and facilities available at the College’s Springburn Campus and provides a safe, welcoming space where people can make friends, learn and have fun.

Programmes are all fully supervised. Several of the College’s Sports & Coaching students are delighted to lead some of the fitness sessions which helps them gain that all-important work experience element for their learning.

Plans are afoot to accredit some of the short courses so that participants can also gain qualifications.

If you are a local Springburn resident and would like to find out more about the Community and Youth Hub, contact communitylearning@glasgowkelvin.ac.uk and we look forward to welcoming you to this new community resource.
